Andy Howells · Freelance Web Developer · Hampshire Based

Bespoke web platforms and business systems, built properly.

One developer, doing the work. No account managers pontificating, no junior developer making bad choices, no agency inflating the budget. You talk directly to the person writing the code, and you can ring me when something needs sorting.

200+ projects
delivered, from brochure sites to web applications, including a dozen bespoke Laravel systems in the last four years, all still running reliably.
16 years
writing production code, mostly in the PHP world. The unfashionable engine young developers love to hate, that actually keeps over 75% of the internet running.
One number
to ring when something needs sorting. No wading through a ticketing system, no support portals. Just me on the other end of the line.
01 / About

Why work with one person?

Beard may vary in length depending on workload

Because the person building your project should be the person you talk to.

I'm Andy. I've been writing software professionally for over 16 years, mostly in the PHP world: WordPress for businesses that need a website, Shopify for companies that need a storefront and Laravel for those that need something completely purpose-built to run their business.

Hire me and you talk to the person doing the work. No account manager waffling on about sprints, no rookie developer making bad decisions or deleting your database and no agency padding your budget to finance their artisanal coffee addictions.

Every system I build is designed for real human beings to use, with the simple principle that if a feature is too complicated to explain without acronyms or too cumbersome to use, it's the wrong feature. The same thing goes for all of my proposals, contracts and invoices.

Plain English, no mysterious technical jargon.

The trade-off: I'm one person, so I have to be selective with the projects I take on. The benefit: when something needs sorting, you can just ring me straight away and it gets done.

  • Direct phone and email. I'm the one who picks up.
  • No ticket system, no support portals.
  • Honest rate-card based quoting, no hidden markups.
  • Plain English contracts, no law degree required.
02 / Services

Two kinds of projects.

Most of what I code falls into one of two camps. Either way, I start by figuring out what you actually need, then scope it, quote it honestly, and build it. No surprises.

03 / Process

No mystery.
Just reliable delivery.

Every project follows the same path. You always know what's happening this week, what's happening next, and exactly where your budget is being spent.

→ Step 01

Conversation

A call, usually around half an hour. You tell me what problem you're trying to solve, I ask the questions nobody else bothers to, and together we figure out what actually needs building.

Sometimes the actual answer is "you don't need me" - and I'll tell you that for free.

→ Step 02

Proposal

I email you a quote or full proposal document with a substantive scope based on our discussions, structured around hour and day estimates with a clear, fixed payment structure.

Plain English, no surprises hidden in subsection 34-2.B of the fine print.

→ Step 03

Build

Work happens along the previously agreed stages and milestones. Each block is reviewable and signed off before the next begins.

You see the progress, flag anything that's off, and nothing moves forward until you're happy.

→ Step 04

Launch & Support

Your new site or system goes live. I fix any bugs free for 12 months. Future changes quoted as they come up.

Ideally, you'll tell someone else about how well your project went - that's usually how most people hear about me!

04 / Recent Work

A few things I've built lately.

A small selection of projects. Get in touch if you'd like to be added to the list.

Picking up the phone is the fastest way, but if you'd rather type, the form works too. Either way, I'll get back to you within a day.
